At Carcavelos beach there is a old large fort called Forte de São Julião da Barra. It was used for many years to protect the entrance of the river Tejo from enemy ships. 
Just a little further along the coast from Cascais you will find Parede Beach, the sea here is renowned for its therapeutic effects for bone problems, due to the amount of iodine in the water. 
A very clean beach, the sea water here is regularly tested and considered one of the best on the Estoril coast. This beach is one of my favourites for its natural look and feel, good facilities & easy access from Lisbon by train or car.
